About this project

The American Association of University Women is celebrating its 125th year of working for education and equity for women and girls.

The Association’s current theme is Education as the Gateway to Women’s Economic Security.

The Raleigh/Wake County branch, founded in 1909, plans a series of events that builds on these national efforts. The first, an information display on February 10, 2007 will share information on

  • the programs of local colleges and universities
  • financial aid resources and information
  • background on why higher education is important
  • stories from women of all ages who managed to balance work, family and school to complete their degrees and improve their lives.

This web site, www.turntolearn.org, was created as an information repository for this effort. If you have additional information to contribute or would like to be involved in planning the next events in the community, please contact info@rwc.aauwnc.org.

Our long range plans include making some of this information available in other languages, especially Spanish, and we will be guided by the feedback we get from the visitors to the February 10 event.

We see this project as embodying the Association’s mission of advancing equity through

  • advocacy - we expect to learn of issues that will have public policy implications
  • education - we hope that the information we provide helps many to seek higher education

and

  • research - the project wouldn’t have been initiated without the push from earlier AAUW Educational Foundation funded research such as Gaining a Foothold.
